There are many different hair loss treatments. It depends heavily on what is the cause of the hair loss.
Note that many treatments for hair loss can be expensive and will not necessarily have the desired effects, instead it should be considered to keep the remaining hair close cropped. Most surveys show that women do not care if men are balding, while not liking the comb over.
Washing hair once of twice a week with a mild shampoo will help to make hair loss fuller, as dirty hair lies more flat and looks sparser.
Also avoid any actions which may make the hair break. Rubbing hair vigorously or blow drying it could cause more hair loss, so instead pat it dry with a towel or use the hair dryer at a lower settings. Undo tangles with fingers rather than a comb and use a brush with soft bristles.
Rogaine can be used to stimulate hair growth in balding areas. It keeps the hair follicles in the growth phase for longer, this means that hairs grow bigger and the rate of thinning declines. There are varying strengths of Rogaine, a 2% strength where no effect is likely to be seen for first few months. There is also a 5% strength version which may be more effective. Whether Rogaine is a good option depends on the type of baldness, generally Rogaine will be more helpful if, hair loss is recent and an area of 10 cm or less is thinning, hair loss is from the top of the head and if the bald area has many tiny hairs. Rogaine is unlikely to help with complete baldness, or receding hair line, or the scalp has very few tiny fine hairs. It is important to note that only about 35% of men have noticeable regrowth of hair and the manufacturer advises users to give up if there has been no regrowth after 1 year, it is also important to read the manufacturers leaflet as Rogaine is not suitable for some people.
This drugs prevents testosterone from conversion into DHT. Finasteride is a once-daily tablet, it seems to be more effective for baldness at the top of the head then baldness at the front. It has to be taken indefinitely for the hair to stay regrown. Men have continued to take this drug for 5 years with satisfactory results ( European Journal of Dermatology 2002; 12:38-49 ) In 1998 a study reported that some hair growth occurred in 66% of men who received Finasteride, and a bald patch of 2.5cm in diameter grew 107 extra hairs, however not much improvement was seen before three months.
This is a surgical procedure where the back and sides hair are used to repopulate the bald area. This involved extracting small grafts of skin from an area where there is plenty of hair, and placing this graft into a tiny incision in the bald area, this is repeated 300-700 times depending on the size of the area. After a few months it is often difficult to distinguish between the hair that has been grafted and the area of normal hair.
